Audio Input

I noticed in the updates section a choice of AES, SDI 1, or SDI 2 for audio input. Can you also choose the analog balanced XLR input from the Kona card?

AJA Kona3 has no analog audio inputs. XLRs are for AES digital audio.

You need to use A/D converter if you want to capture analog audio.
But we recommend asking sound-men to give you AES, there's been few years since they all started using Digital Audio Recorders...

On music videos there will be no AES from playback. Seems like alot of converters.

Hardware is always a compromise. If you are willing to trade LIVE STEREOSCOPIC OUTPUT for ANALOG AUDIO INPUT, then you can choose to use 2x Decklink instead of 1x Kona3 for QtakeHDx2.
Also note that QtakeHDx1 with IoHD can capture analog audio.

Now this is a Red Cam related audio question... When shooting sync sound with Red Cam, is soundman typically feeding the audio to camera? How? Analog or AES? If the camera is fed by audio of some kind, does it embed that audio track on its HD-SDI preview output?

Happy New Year, Viktor.
Yes. Soundman is usually feeding the audio to camera, either analog or digital, and the RED ONE embeds this audio into live SDI output. This is a great solution since you can just run a single cable to QTAKE and capture video, audio and timecode.

I have been using the embedded audio since day one and it works great.

One point by a soundman here in New York was that the feeds going to the camera were not "his" mix of the sound so that this could be an issue
with some directors. So the last job I did I recorded analog in and there was a delay so I used the Behringer Shark to handle the delay.

I will ask soundman in the future if the could send a mixed feed to the camera and see if this will work as it's much easier.

Lee,

there should be no sync issues with analog audio, because QTAKE is delaying audio to match 2 frame latency of video.
Did this happen with IoExpress and MBP 15"? Maybe your machine is adding some latency due to slower decoding of video...
How much did you have to delay analog audio to match SDI video?

I fed SDI embedded audio into my Mac 15" laptop with Qtake. We were also using a Raptor HDx that had Analog audio in from the soundman. We were shooting two cameras.

We delayed the audio 3 frames into the Raptor HDx. A always carry the Behringer Shark audio delay and have only used it one time.
